We welcome you to the Africa Symposium 2022, an international scientific symposium that shall focus on malaria elimination challenges in the Great Lake region and beyond, where member countries share many biomedical, eco-epidemiological, socio-economical, and geopolitical issues. It seeks to find ways to accelerate malaria elimination in the region as soon as the COVID-19 pandemic becomes less pressing. The symposium program includes a diverse range of speakers from institutions and organizations worldwide, focusing on the current developments in the field of malaria. The two-day hybrid symposium will allow in-person attendance at the Acacia Premier Hotel at the Lake Victoria in Kisumu Kenya and remote access via a virtual meeting platform whose details shall be provided upon registration to attend the symposium.
The Japanese government has been funding several research programs on malaria, neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), and other infectious diseases in Africa. The symposium shall introduce some major Japanese government-funded programs, such as Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS), discuss the roles of their programs in Africa in the international frames of malaria and other infectious disease control, and further share details on their recent June 2022 Kigali Summit on Malaria and NTDs.
Finally, African scientists and policymakers who lead the malaria control studies and programs shall have the opportunity to share their findings and issues on the ground. Through such sharing, we hope the symposium shall offer potential areas of mutual research interests and the possibility of creating a mechanism to continue discussions and facilitate coordination and cooperation between Africa and Japan researchers.
